ADVENTURE BOULDER

CHAUTAUQUA HIKING TRAILS

Chautauqua (pronounced shah-TAH-kwah) is situated at the base of the Flatirons, making it a popular hiking destination and the best way to explore the iconic Boulder Flatirons. After wandering around the grounds, hike up Chautauqua Trail, then choose from a handful of connecting routes to keep exploring or come back down. Among the many hikes at Chautauqua, two of the most popular are the Chautauqua & Bluebird Trail Loop and the Royal Arch Trail.

For more information on Parking, Directions and Hiking Trails please visit the Boulder Guide to Chautauqua Hiking Trails linked below.

Chautauqua & Bluebird Trail Loop

This front-and-center route is like a church aisle leading to the altar of the Flatirons, flanked by tall grasses and sprinklings of wildflowers. The Bluebell Mesa Trail spurs off of the Chautauqua Trail, providing a lovely, easy-going (if brief) route lined with ponderosa pine. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, this 1.6-mile loop trail takes an average of 56 min to complete.

Royal Arch Trail

Generally considered a more challenging route, for those looking for a good workout, this 3.3-mile out and back trail is well worth it for the reward at the end: a massive, sandstone arch that frames views of Boulder and beyond. To reach Royal Arch, you’ll start at the Chautauqua Trailhead, take Bluebell Road to the Bluebell Shelter, then follow signs for the Royal Arch Trail.
